Performance events test your dog’s innate abilities as hunting companions.
The Sporting group is divided into 3 sections Retrievers, Pointers, and Flushing/spaniels. For each there is field trials where dogs can earn amateur field championships and field championships. These are highly competitive as the dog/handler teams are running for placements and the ultimate championships. Field trials have been going on for as long as humans have been using dogs in the field. In the 1980’s the AKC developed hunt tests to test dog/handler teams on their skills in the field and are pass/fail based. Teams can Earn JR, SR, and MA titles by passing the required number of tests for each level.
Many hounds and terriers were original developed as hunting companions as well for these breeds there are events for them. For Coonhounds there are Coonhound events, there’s also Beagle, Basset Hound, and Dachshund field trials. For the terriers there’s Earthdog events.
